Hello Don Mills Tennis Club members:
We’re ten days into operation and it’s great to see the courts busy again!
Congratulations to all of you for your wonderful cooperation, booking online [it is easy!], keeping safe distances, and helping the club stay tidy. Things are running very smoothly.
We’ve bought new wind screens which will replace some of our worn-out ones, and new shade umbrellas. Please collapse the sun umbrella if no one is coming behind you to play, or if someone left it up for the evening. This prevents breaking of the tines or tearing of the fabric should the weather turn gusty after you have left. Last year, we lost a few in a matter of weeks as they were left open overnight.
Kaffeeklatsch
I’m anticipating the City will be relaxing some rules as the Covid numbers are getting lesser. Anticipating that, we will start our popular Kaffeeklatsch programme [Tues and Friday mornings] as of June 15th. We are in the process of strategizing how to run this safely for all participants, and the challenges are that we cannot linger, cannot just drop in, no Kaffee, but we can do tennis. The club is ready to dedicate the courts and we are in the process of exactly how to run the program, but it will entail registering your name for every KK session so we can have a cutoff number and an idea of who and how many will be there each session. Broad lines, we are thinking of a group of 16 participants from 8:30 -10 a.m, and another group of 16 participants from 10 or 10:15 to 11:45 a.m. This year, under Covid, we cannot run it as in past years where one just dropped in and picked up a game, sorry. Janet Blair will be our lead on this program. More info on KK soon, on exactly how, but hope is near- we will have Kaffeeklatsch!
House League
We will also start our popular Wednesday night 7-10 pm House League program by June 23, or June 16 if permitted. Your first step, if interested, is to sign up online here. Interest in House League (HL) is always high, so we will take Level 3.0 to 4.0, first come, first served. If you’re better than 4.0, you don’t need HL 😉! Give the space to someone else. This year, since we cannot congregate, we will not have HL tryouts. HL captains and I will look at the registrant forms and create balanced teams. We might not get everything right as there are many new members, but we will try – you have to be able to play Doubles ably at 3.0 level and above, and be able to manage up to 10 games. More of the rules can be found online or will be explained later. Please register online. Cut-off deadline for House League registration is Fri June 11.
Singles Round Robin
Every year, Don Mills Tennis Club runs a Singles round robin. Nigel McClean, our Leagues Director and a very dedicated individual, will inform you of the rules and such. If you’re interested in singles match play, first to 10, arrange your match times to suit, etc. Please contact Nigel directly before June 6th at
[email protected].
A gentle reminder to continue taking care with hands/face hygiene, and enough distancing, masks onto court play and when exiting, and no unnecessary loitering please. Bring your own water bottles. And don’t forget the sunscreen!
