Congratulations DMTC juniors! who won the gold medal at last Sunday’s OTA Rocks Festival/ ICTA Junior Tournament.

Both teams went deep into quarter-finals, semis, then finals. In dramatic fashion, a U18 doubles 10-point tiebreaker was needed to decide the championship against Dentonia TC. The tiebreaker score was 3-3, 6-6, 9-9, and then 11-9 for Don Mills. CONGRATULATIONS juniors on showing your toughness and managing your game! Congrats also to the hard-working Jr team captains John Chow and Ken Chin. President Angela went to cheer and support and has no nails left due to nervousness.

Members: junior development is so important and yet, is dwindling. It is efforts by community clubs like ours which instill the love of tennis for life, teach hard work and honest competition, and provide opportunities to grow our juniors to one day become successful pro players. If you have an interest in volunteering for Junior tennis development, please speak to Angela Kooij separately.

We are in full summer stretch with the tennis club and it’s a happy sight to see the courts and club being used so well. Remember to cancel your courts if you can’t make it – someone else always wants it.

Programs such as KaffeKlatsch and House League are popular and well attended. They are all full. Thank you to all the volunteers helping with these.

The Friday Fun ‘n drills events with Nigel are also quickly grabbed up in spots. Members are loving it! Remember to share and not book two or three sessions, and aim for your appropriate ability level as best possible.

Civic Holiday: This Mon Aug 2, there will NOT be a club social. Your volunteers need their long weekend off too. The Board decided socials were going to be organized for July 1 Canada Day, September 5 Labour Day, and Oct. 10th Thanksgiving day. Please feel free to book your own courts socially for Civic Day. Enjoy your time with family, kids, and friends.

The National Bank Open (NBO) hosts the lady’s professional tennis players at Sobey Centre Aug 6-14. Support Canadian tennis and enjoy some fine matches. There are plenty of tickets still available, and discounts can be had.

To note, extra activity happening at the club – Junior camps started in early July and will carry into the end of August. Both our coaches and their assistants are busy. Please be cautious of the little ones – people are seen riding their bikes or their scooters right up to court #1. Please park your bikes at the bike parking areas provided, or if not parking, then descend and walk your bike/scooter towards the practice wall. Even members can be mowed down at the court 3 benches or driveway with a bike speeding by. And please, NO SCOOTERS ON the courts themselves. Please protect the court surfaces.

Sharing of the fridge/freezer space:

Sorry for the housekeeping notes, but with the full swing of the season, our freezer and fridge space needs to be respectfully shared. There is free ice in the freezer for members, but the freezies there are for junior campers use only. They were purchased by the coach, for the camp kids, by the coach’s money, so, as inviting as it is to have something deliciously cool … and only just one, or two or three …. uhn uhn! Please respect that it is not free for anyone to have. Also, do not offer freezies to the kids, especially when they’re not yours! …freezies that is, not your kids neither 😀 Ask permission of the camp leader first if you are offering any snacks, fruits, or foods that you brought. They don’t want the kids full of sugar when they’ve got the whole day to get through. The camp leader will see to the offering of your snacks at the appropriate break time and will supervise it.

Monitors and some members help to clean the clubhouse after campers have been, but folks, a certain amount of ‘messiness’ will have to be entertained. This is a camp season, and kids will be kids. There will be cookie and pizza crumbs. We enjoy seeing the kids, and we all share the clubhouse facilities, so no point complaining about messiness to us. If you see a banana peel, help pick it up. Thanks

Pay it forward by re-filling the ice trays or cold water pitchers in the fridge.

Continue enjoying the summer tennis at Don Mills!
